A finned visitor prompts shut down of Abu Dhabi beach

A rare whale shark was spotted in the waters of Abu Dhabi after which a local beach was closed to swimmers. The management has decided to prohibit swimmers from swimming into the waters off the Al Bahar beach which is in the Corniche area until Friday. The whale shark is a highly endangered species and is considered to be harmless unlike its infamous cousin the Great White Shark.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) had made the proclamation announcing the sighting of the rare finned visitor. Even though they do not usually attack humans, the EAD has urged people to keep away from the waters in view of health and safety considerations.

The beach is expected to be opened to swimmers by Friday. The whale shark can be often found swimming calmly in the waterways and marinas of Abu Dhabi. The EAD also asked boat drivers to steer clear of the shark in case they encountered it and moreover report any sighting to them.
