A rare phenomenon was observed in the UAE skies by a team of scientists at the International Astronomy Centre. The team from the IAC witnessed and chronicled an extremely rare celestial occurrence wherein the star ‘HIP 48351’ vanished for six seconds by the asteroid 790 Pretoria.
The team said that this rare phenomenon could only be observed in a narrow belt in certain areas. The occurrence is termed as occultation or disappearance. The director of the IAC, Mohammed Shawkat, said that the event was witnessed in a narrow belt that did not exceed 160 km in the north of the UAE. The event was especially prevalent in the north of Ras Al Khaimah.
Meanwhile, scientists are of the opinion that the phenomenon will provide some valuable insights and data that will help them gain more knowledge about the celestial world.
