Abu Dhabi airport to harvest energy from footsteps of travellers

Abu Dhabi airport has announced the launch of an interactive walkway which will convert the energy from the footsteps of travellers into electricity with an aim to further the airport’s commitment to sustainable practices, educating travellers and residents alike about different sources of off-grid energy and data.

The 16 sq.m energy harvesting walkway connects two terminals, Terminals 1 and 3 of the airport. As travellers pass between these two terminals, their footsteps will be converted into electrical energy to track footfall data and power lighting along the walkway. The airport expects to capture the footsteps of around 8000 travellers per day. The system also include screens to display how much energy is being harvested with a special game interface for children which shows airplanes rising and descending according to how much energy is being generated.
