The Federal National Council (FNC) passed a new draft law on integrated waste management to protect the environment and lessen the harms on human health, during the 18th meeting of the 3rd ordinary session of the 16th legislative chapter held in Abu Dhabi. Establishments caught throwing, burying, or burning waste or dumping them in open areas, waterways, public parks, or any other place that is not designated for such a purpose, will have to pay a fine of Dh1 million.
The law aims to prevent the negative effects of generating waste and its management and will boost the country’s efforts on the economic level while encouraging sustainable and smart solutions on waste handling. The law applies to all waste management process stages beginning from the production, separation, collection, moving, storage, reusing or recycling, to treating and disposing of the wastes inside the country, including the free zones. Nuclear and radioactive waste, however, are excluded from the law.
