Doctors in the UAE urge residents to avoid self-medication

How many of us have indulged in some seemingly convenient self-medication whenever an affliction strikes? With the internet being a powerhouse of information, many of us do not think twice before ‘googling’ for effective remedies. However, doctors in the UAE warn that self-medication can have rather disastrous consequences, in some cases even proving fatal. Consuming pills and medication without proper prescription can sometimes cause immense harm to internal organs.

Doctors in the UAE are now concerned about a potential resistance to antibiotics that is developing among people because of rampant and unsupervised use of medicines. Doctors believe that if this trend continues, antibiotics many lose their efficacy once and for all. Moreover, self-medication could cause potential damage to internal organs like the kidney, liver and stomach and cause internal bleeding.

Doctors say the practice of self-medication also poses a danger to society as a whole since it could cause the return of the bacteria in a whole new avatar that is not susceptible to the drug anymore. It is estimated that by 2050, about 10 million deaths could occur because of antibiotic resistance.
