Visitors to the Dubai Creek were taken aback at the sight of an unusual visitor from the depths of the ocean. A whale shark that lost its way while navigating the waters, found itself in the Dubai Creek causing much excitement among visitors. The shark which seems to have lost its bearing near Jaddaf area was seen swimming about in the creek.
The unexpected ‘guest’ was a juvenile whale shark, a species that is listed on the endangered list. The authorities immediately assembled three diving teams who ventured into the creek onboard two rescue vessels. A team of experts from the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment worked in tandem with the Dubai Police to gently nudge the shark into an underwater carriage and transported it back to its home in the deep waters.
The Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, put out the rescue video of the five-hour rescue operation on his official Twitter handle and hailed the efforts of the team. He also added that the UAE is committed to protecting its wildlife, especially the species that are under threat of extinction.
