The dangers of salmonella and food poisoning have been suitably highlighted in a food safety campaign carried out by the Dubai Municipality. The week-long campaign entitled ‘Together for Food Safety’ sought to raise awareness on how to consume foods the right way and also lend insights into the proper storage of egg-based products.
The campaign was initiated in the wake of instances of salmonella poisoning that were detected in the city. During the first half of the year, up to 800 cases were identified of which about 180 were related to salmonella poisoning. The consumption of unsafe eggs can cause salmonella poisoning and therefore it is imperative that they are stored appropriately.
The campaign focused on eggs after it was revealed that a major fraction of food poisoning was caused by egg-based products. However, the fact also remains that salmonella can be transported by people travelling in an out of the city. Eggs should be fresh and preferably stored at temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees. The venues of the campaign were branches of the Lulu Hypermarkets in Dubai.
