Now there is yet another great reason to visit the UAE for carrying out your shopping agendas. Millions of tourists visiting the country will now get VAT refunds starting from November. Though the scheme will be initially applicable only at the airports in Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the government will put in measures to extend it to 12 exit points that will also include ports and land borders.
The Tourist Refund Scheme and Federal tax Authority (FTA) have set the minimum limit for being eligible to get VAT refunds at Dh 250. To be eligible for the VAT refund, you have to a non-UAE resident and above 18. Tourist can claim their refunds at the Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi International airports until December 16. Subsequently, it will be made available at Dubai Mina Rashid Harbour, Al Ain land border, Fujairah Airport, Ras Al Khaimah Airport and Abu Dhabi Port Zayed among other zones.
Tourists will also be required to prove that the goods are in an unused condition. Moreover, the refunds can be claimed only by the passport holder under whose name the tax free forms are registered. Tourists will receive around 85 per cent of the total VAT amount though an administration fee of Dh 4.80 will be levied on each refund.
