In a historic moment signifying the gradually changing political landscape of India, Congress President Rahul Gandhi met with the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi today. Also present during the meet was His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah. This is the first time that a Congress leader has had a meeting with the Sharjah Ruler making it a significant milestone.
Though meeting the Sharjah Ruler was not initially part of Rahul Gandhi’s itinerary, the meet materailised because of the concerted efforts by V T Saleem, a prominent member of the Malayalee business community in Sharjah. Before the meeting was set up, it was appraised to the Ruler’s Court and consequently, the Chairman, Sheikh Salam, gained the permission to go ahead with the meting between the two leaders.
During the meeting, the Sharjah Ruler and Gandhi discussed the strong bilateral ties that exist between the UAE and India. In addition, they also discussed issues like economic ties, enhancing investments, promoting cultural communication and furthering educational agendas.
The Sharjah Ruler congratulated Gandhi on his rising prominence in both national and international arenas. He also talked about the long association of the leadership of the UAE with the family of the late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s family. On his part, Gandhi commended Sharjah for the incredible developments made in the scientific, cultural and educational domains. He also praised the ruler for his support for various humanitarian and educational projects, a reflection of the ruler’s vision.
Rahul Gandhi returns to New Delhi tomorrow after an eventful visit. He thanked the leaders of the UAE and also conveyed his gratuture to the Indian community for their support. He said that the party will look into including suggestions from Indian Muslims in the upcoming elections, assigning Sam Pitroda to arrange the same.
