A Humpback Whale, 16 meters long was found dead at the coast of Khor Fakkan town near the international container port. The carcass was spotted by a local fisherman and was reported to the Coast Guard around 6 am on Monday.
The authorities said that the whale may have been migrating towards the Horn of Africa from the open ocean. There were bore marks on the Whales body indicating that it may have been hit by a ship’s propeller which could be the reason for its death. Khor Fakkan Municipality staff had to use a loader to tow the giant creature ashore and eventually move it to the Environment and Protected Areas premises.
The authority now plans to put the whale’s skeleton on display in a Kalba protected areas facility which will be inaugurated next year.
“We rarely get whales as big as this one on our coast,” said Al Suwaid. “We think displaying it in one place in the emirate is good for children and others to educate them about marine life,” she added.
