Indian expats in UAE celebrate harvest festivals

As India marks several harvest festivals that coincide with spring, Indian expats living in the UAE have come together to celebrate the festive spirit with enthusiasm and passion.

The Sikhs from the Indian state of Punjab celebrated Baisakhi while the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana ushered in their own version of New year called Ugadi.

Since last week, as the festivals came through, Hindus from various parts of India have been indulging in some heavy duty celebrations. Many community groups have also organised entertainment shows and cultural programmes that saw active participation by expats.

Meanwhile, the supermarkets in the UAE have been witnessing thriving business since the expats consume a large selection of vegetable and fruits during the festive season. Yesterday, the Keralite community, who form the largest fraction among the Indian community in the UAE, celebrated the popular festival, Vishu.
