Tragedy struck a farm in the wee hours of Sunday as a bolt of lighting hit a barn that housed rare Falcon chicks. The barn located in the Al Dhafra area, was struck by lighting that resulted in the Falcon chicks being charred to death.
The owner of the barn, Khalfan Bin Butti Al Qubaisi, said that the incident had caused estimated losses amounting to as much as Dh 20 million after the death of rare Falcon chicks that were trained to compete in high level Falconry tournaments.
He said the one of the birds that succumbed to the lighting bolt was renowned in Falconry circles and cost a whopping Dh 10 million. He said that the lighting bolt was so strong that the entire building and nests were reduced to a pile of ashes while the birds were burnt alive.
