An Air India Express flight that was bound for Dubai hit the outer wall of the airport in Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu from where it was taking off. There were 130 passengers and six crew members aboard the flight that had a miraculous escape when its wheels hit the wall. The flight IX-611 took off from 1.20 am and was subsequently diverted to Mumbai airport where it was cleared for emergency landing.
The emergency landing was part of a precautionary measure even though the aircraft system was functioning normally. Captain D Ganesh Babu who was piloting the plane was informed of the incident by the staff at Trichy. The Boeing B737-800 was then safely grounded in Mumbai.
Passengers aboard the flight were shifted to another flight that took them onward to Dubai. Captain Babu has been de-rostered amid investigations focused on the incident. A portion of the wall was damaged. However, the quotient of damage to the flight was not known.
