In a measure that will drastically reduce the time required for passengers to clear immigration and passport checks, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai launched the Smart Tunnel at Dubai Airports’ Terminal 3. The smart tunnel has been currently introduced in its pilot phase and will help passengers to wind up passport control in less than 15 seconds.
The smart tunnel is for first and business class passengers traveling through Dubai International Airport. The smart tunnel works by relying on face and iris recognition technology and typically a passenger exiting through the tunnel can finish the entire process without the need to interact with any human.
The director of GDRFA, Major-General Mohammad Ahmad Al Merri, said that the initiative will remain in the pilot phase until it’s official inauguration by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The project is touted as the first of its kind and will set the precedent for the implementation of additional technological measures to facilitate passenger travel
