The Professional Association of Diving Instructors, Padi, and Project AWARE, a global non-profit organisation, have spearheaded a collaborative venture that will encourage and train divers in the UAE to preserve and sustain marine life through the implementation of a project that will be designed to eliminate marine pollution. From September 15 to September 23, divers from all over the world will congregate for the first international AWARE Week.
The organisations are spreading awareness on how to adapt responsible diving practices and to also bring together the community of divers under an umbrella project known as Dive Against Debris. The project is the first of its kind globally and will be carried out throughout the year and will additionally help in generating data about the kind of things found on the sea bed.
The project is aimed at training divers on how to safely and efficiently fish out debris and garbage and also the classifications under which each variety of debris would fall under so as to create a fathomable database. In the UAE, almost 8800 items of debris have been identified since the start of the venture with a major fraction falling under the category of plastics.
