RTA announces scheme to introduce surveillance cameras on Dubai taxis

In a measure that is expected to boost the aspects of safety and also to ensure that taxi drivers comply with the existing laws, the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that all taxis in Dubai will now be equipped with surveillance cameras. The initiative is expected to be absolutely implemented by October of this year.

Presently, of the more than 11,000 taxis plying the roads of Dubai, an estimated 9,000 have already been fitted with the surveillance cameras. The taxis also come equipped with a DVR device that saves the footage from the cameras. Meanwhile, plans are also afoot to establish a centralized system that will monitor the footage from the taxis in real time.

The RTA has initiated the measure in order to keep a check on the activities of taxi drivers and whether they are diligent in complying with the rules. Moreover, it will also seek to examine the conduct of the drivers and the quality of their interaction with passengers.
