The Special Olympics 2019 is finally here. The event kick started at the Zayed Sports City Stadium with a gala opening ceremony that highlighted inclusiveness and the values that underscore the Special Olympics. Around 7500 athletes from almost 192 countries are participating in the games, making it the largest contingent ever in the history of the games.
The ceremony was officially opened by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, yesterday. In the inaugural speech, Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed that the UAE was proud to host the athletes and conveyed the message of persistence and determination. Sheikh Mohamed made the statements as the “Flame of Hope’ was set alight.
As the athletes made their way to the stadium, their high spirits were palpable. The fact that so many Special Athletes have gathered here representing a wide array of nationalities, makes it a demonstration of how far people of determination can go with courage and zeal. The message is clear and looming large – people of determination are indeed determined to do absolutely anything. The Spcial Olympics is expected to run till March 21, providing an avenue for residents to enjoy one of of the greatest sporting spectacles in the world.
