Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair, chairman of the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, received the ‘Philanthropist of the Year’ award at the World Congress for Muslim Philanthropists in London. He has called upon his fellow countrymen to generate more donations for humanitarian causes, calling for more collaborative ventures that sustain such initiatives. He was honored for his initiative for helping out refugees by setting up a Dh 100 m fund.
He said that as banks and businesses in the UAE make steady progress, philanthropy should be made a top priority so that it goes hand-in-hand with notions of development. In his keynote address, Mr Ghurair said that the process of learning is enduring and never really stops. He added that it all comes down to institutionalizing the organization.
He also added that young entrepreneurs should start their charitable work early in their career so that they do not lose focus. Moreover, he added that when they start early they can also make improvements to their strategy of giving. The Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation ensures that underprivileged students in the region find a way to pursue their educational dreams. Moreover, it has received more than 50,000 applications and supported the academic ventures of 800 scholars.
