UAE doctors concerned about increase in cases of body dysmorphic disorder

For those who are not familiar with the term, body dysmorphic disorder is a condition that causes people to be overly worried about real or perceived flaws that ostensibly mar their appearance. The UAE is witnessing a rising number of cases where patients are being diagnosed with this condition. Psychologists in the UAE believe that the rising number of cases is indicative of a deep-rooted need to look and feel perfect.
Even though there is no sufficient data to estimate the number of people in the UAE who are affected by this condition, it is believed that one in 50 people are affected worldwide by the body dysmorphic disorder. Though the condition has only recently been detected in the UAE, doctors are of the opinion that it is definitely on the rise. Psychologists say that it is the airbrushed and photo shopped images that are portrayed in the media that has led to a heightened sense of insecurity in people. Thus there are more people now coming in for plastic surgery and other fixes that they feel may help with improving their appearance.
So what are the signs and symptoms to look out for in people afflicted by this condition? For one, many patients will have an obsession for experimenting with surgical procedures to improve their appearance even though they are seldom satisfied with the results. Patients are constantly worried about their appearance and keep checking themselves in the mirror to assuage their feelings. This condition that can sometimes develop as early as the adolescent stage, can have a detrimental influence on the patient’s family since it brings along with it a host of phobias and social anxieties. An early diagnosis and consistent treatment can go a long way in resolving these conflicting feelings.
