The residents of the UAE especially the avid star gazers are in for a rare celestial treat as the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st century is expected to unfold tonight. Five astronomy centres across the country are giving the public an opportunity to witness this special lunar phenomenon in delightful detail. The celestial event is being promoted as the night of the ‘Red Moon’ and the ‘Red Planet’ wherein the moon will turn an extraordinary shade of blood red when it aligns with the earth and sun, before reverting to its original color.
The event is anticipated to be the longest of the century and will last for an estimated 103 minutes spanning from 9.14 pm to 3.28 am UAE time. Residents in the UAE will have the best view in the world and therefore there is more reason to defy sleep in order to witness this rare event.
In keeping with the excitement generated by the imminent eclipse, the UAE Space Agency is offering vantage points of observation throughout the country that will enable residents to have a protracted view. This move is also an attempt to elicit interest among the youth on matters of space and astronomy. However, those who do not want to undertake a trip to the space agency can just step out of their homes to view the most entertaining celestial spectacle of the century.
