It was a special moment as 60 extraordinary women who representated different nationalities were welcomed back by their eager families after successfully completing the 170 km Women’s Heritage Walk that was spread across the desert from Abu Dhabi to Al Ain. The walk was accomplished in a timeframe of five days.
The Women’s Heritage Walk is in its fifth edition this year. The event is avidly supported by several sponsors that include the Salama Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation and the Department of Culture and Tourism — Abu Dhabi.
The significance and distinctness of the heritage walk is attributed to the fact that it mimics the historical journey that Emiratis used to undertake when travelling to Al Ain from Abu Dhbai for the purpose of trade. Some of these travellers made the journey seeking cooler climes as well.
The women walked an average of 10 hours everyday and would commence their journey just before sunrise. As sunset would near, they would set up camp for the night and have a magnificent time sleeping while watching the celestial scene above.
The completion of the walk was celebrated at a ceremony held at the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi where Shaikh Nahayan Bin Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance, handed over a certificate to the participants. Shaikh Nahyan praised the women and said that they were an apt representation of the diversity that defines the UAE today.
