World’s first autonomous pods tested in Dubai

World’s first autonomous pods designed to travel short and medium distances in dedicated lanes have been tested on the sidelines of the World Government Summit. Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in cooperation with Next Future Transportation, launched the first tests of the autonomous pods as part of RTA’s efforts under Dubai Future Accelerators initiatives.

The autonomous pods measuring 2.87m in length, 2.24m in width and 2.82m in height, can be coupled in 15 to 20 seconds and can be detached in 5 seconds, depending on the destination of riders. Each pod weighs about 1,500kg, has an average speed is 20 km/h and has a capacity to accommodate 10 riders. It has cameras and electromechanical technologies to carry out the coupling and detaching processes, and this feature can be activated in-motion as well. The pod’s battery lasts up to three hours and is chargeable in six hours.
